Arunachal Pradesh Faces Record Monsoon Rainfall: What It Means for Residents
Itanagar, June 2 (IANS) — Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has announced that Arunachal Pradesh has experienced the heaviest monsoon rains in the world this year. The northeastern state has faced severe impact from these rains, with multiple landslides occurring across various districts, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals since May 30.
On Sunday, Rijiju, who is originally from Arunachal Pradesh, shared on his X account, “Arunachal Pradesh receives the heaviest monsoon rains in the world.” He posted a video showing a man crossing a traditional hanging bridge in Anjaw district, situated near the tri-junction of India, China, and Myanmar. He urged the public to remain cautious and assured that the government would provide necessary support.
In response to the tragedies caused by the landslides, the Arunachal Pradesh government has declared an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 4 lakh for each family member of those who lost their lives in the recent incidents. The casualties include seven individuals from East Kameng district and two from Lower Subansiri district, all of whom died due to landslides triggered by persistent torrential rain since May 29.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and stated that assistance would be rendered through the appropriate district administrations. State Home Minister and local MLA Mama Natung, along with Rijiju, shared their deep sorrow over the losses.
The tragic incidents included a family vehicle being swept off the road by a devastating landslide on National Highway-13 between the Bana and Seppa stretches, claiming the lives of seven individuals, including two women and two children. Additionally, in a separate occurrence in Lower Subansiri district, two laborers lost their lives, while two others were rescued after a landslide affected a cabbage farm in the Pine Grove area along the Ziro-Kamle road.
In light of these events, Chief Minister Khandu has urged residents to stay vigilant and to refrain from unnecessary travel, particularly at night. He also cautioned against venturing into rivers and water bodies during this precarious period. Khandu emphasized that all concerned departments remain on high alert to address emergencies as they arise.
