ANSAM to Stage Urgent 48-Hour Picketing Over Border Fencing Issues

The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) announced a 48-hour office picketing across all Naga-inhabited hill districts of Manipur, starting Monday, June 2, 2025. This protest aims to oppose the Government of India’s ongoing border fencing initiatives and the cancellation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR).

In its statement, ANSAM declared, “This movement is a united demonstration expressing our resentment.” The association urged all affiliated units and organizations to strictly adhere to the picketing, asserting that the protest is a defense of the Naga people’s ancestral land and family unity. They also issued a warning against anyone, including contractors and transporters, involved in supplying materials for the fencing project, suggesting severe repercussions.

In solidarity, several organizations, including the United Naga Council, the Chandel Naga People’s Organisation (CNPO), and the Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS), have publicly supported ANSAM’s initiative.

Nagas in Manipur oppose the Indian government’s plan to revoke the Free Movement Regime along the Indo-Myanmar border and to enforce border fencing. The government’s proposal includes constructing a fence along the 1,643 km porous border at an estimated cost of Rs 31,000 crore, despite significant resistance from various voluntary organizations representing the Naga and Kuki communities. Currently, about ten kilometers of fence has been erected in Tengnoupal district.

Additionally, the Indian government has restricted the Free Movement Regime along the Manipur-Myanmar border, intensifying local concerns.
