Strategic Report on Northeast Investment Due by September: Tripura CM Highlights Urgency
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Saturday that a high-level task force aimed at promoting investment in the Northeast is set to submit its report to the North Eastern Council (NEC) by September. The report will outline a strategy to foster investment in the region. Established by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) in March, the task force, led by Saha himself, has been working to create a roadmap that positions the Northeast as an attractive destination for investors.
During the North Eastern Region Stakeholders’ Consultation Meeting, Saha highlighted the efforts of DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in encouraging private investment in the Northeast. He noted that the Rising Northeast Investment Summit, held on May 23 and 24 in Delhi, successfully attracted a record investment proposal of USD 4.3 million, with delegates from 80 countries, including European nations, participating. The summit was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who emphasized the region’s potential.
Saha also expressed a strong sentiment that emerged during the investment conclave, stating that India’s future is linked to the Northeast, which is evolving into a center for global partnership. He emphasized the unique resources and strengths of each northeastern state that remain underutilized.
According to Saha, Arunachal Pradesh has great potential for hydroelectricity, while Assam is well-suited for oil and electronics. Manipur could become a hub for sports and filmmaking, Meghalaya for hospitality and education, Mizoram for bamboo and handicrafts, and Nagaland for tourism and agriculture. Tripura stands to benefit from its assets in tourism, agar, rubber, education, and health.
Saha also referenced a study conducted by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which focused on the Northeast Economic Corridor. The study proposed a multi-modal transport network linking the Northeast with the rest of India and neighboring South Asian countries. It identified 24 priority growth centers and 20 border centers aimed at realizing the goal of “Viksit Bharat” or Developed India.
