Critical Talks: 25 BJP MLAs Converge in Imphal for Manipur’s Future
Nearly 25 MLAs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) convened at the residence of party MLA Thongam Biswajit Singh in Imphal, Manipur, on May 30, in a move to advocate for the establishment of a popular government in the state. This gathering follows a meeting held on May 28, where around 10 MLAs, including eight from the BJP, one from the National People’s Party (NPP), and one Independent MLA, approached Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan to claim the right to form a government.
The meeting with the governor took place amidst ongoing civil disobedience efforts in the Imphal valley, led by a Meitei organization. They accused central armed forces of disrespecting the state’s identity by obscuring the words “Manipur State Transport” on a state-run bus on May 20.
Independent MLA Sapam Nishikanta Singh emphasized the desire among the populace for a popular government, stating, “The majority of people want a popular government installed, which is why we came here to meet the Governor.” He noted that discussions also involved the potential changes in the functioning of the President’s rule once a popular government is in place, adding that the governor’s response was positive.
The state has been under President’s Rule since February 13, shortly after the resignation of BJP leader N. Biren Singh as Chief Minister. Since the outbreak of ethnic conflict on May 3, 2023, hundreds of lives have been lost in Manipur.
