Tragic Rockfall Claims Life of Truck Driver in Nagaland
In a tragic incident at Pagala Pahar in New Chumoukedima on NH 29, a truck driver lost his life when a massive rock fell onto his dumper truck around 8 am on Friday. The accident resulted in immediate fatality for the driver, identified as 28-year-old Abdul Salam Laskar. He was traveling from Jharnapani to Chümoukedima when the incident occurred, which also severely damaged the truck’s cabin.
Laskar was a resident of New Showuba village in Niuland district but originally hailed from Dinanathpur village in Hailakandi district, Assam. His body was later handed over to grieving family members at the Chümoukedima police station.
Expressing his sorrow over the tragedy, Nagaland’s Deputy Chief Minister TR Zeliang, who oversees national highways, explained that the incident took place in an area undergoing valley-side road restoration after being affected by river erosion. Although work on installing rockfall barriers and netting by M/s Maccaferri Pvt. Ltd. is in progress, the specific section where this incident occurred remains unaddressed due to ongoing restoration efforts. Zeliang indicated that he would engage with the National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. to ensure prompt and effective remedial actions. He extended his condolences to Laskar’s family and assured that the government would explore all options to aid the implementing agency in enhancing commuter safety.
This accident marks the third fatal rockfall incident on this stretch of highway within three years, with similar occurrences reported in 2023 and 2024.
