Navigating Tariff Turmoil: How Business Travel Can Thrive Amidst Challenges

Global optimism in the business travel sector has plummeted, with a report from the Global Business Travel Association revealing a significant drop in positive sentiment. The study, which surveyed over 900 professionals in the industry, found that feelings of optimism fell from 67% in November 2024 to just 31% by April 2025. Factors influencing this decline include increased tariffs, stricter border policies, and other government regulations introduced this year.

In what might be a troubling sign for industry recovery, more than 25% of respondents from Canada, the United States, and Europe reported feeling "pessimistic" or "very pessimistic" about the future of business travel. Notably, 40% of those surveyed expressed ambivalence, stating they feel neither positive nor negative about the outlook. "Since I have been in my role for four years, I haven’t seen this high of a level of uncertainty," said Suzanne Neufang, CEO of the association, during a conversation with CNBC Travel.

The survey also indicated that nearly one-third of business travel buyers expect their companies to curtail employee trips this year, while another 20% remain uncertain about future travel plans. This lack of confidence is evident as respondents are hesitant to make definitive predictions. Furthermore, 27% of those surveyed anticipate a decrease in overall business travel spending.

Long-term concerns loom large, with a third of business travel buyers revealing their companies have altered or are contemplating changes to their travel policies regarding the U.S. Some 6% reported relocating events to other countries. Neufang noted, "From an APAC perspective, and certainly from a European perspective, maybe even LATAM, there’s the opportunity to be the source of where these meetings take place," indicating potential shifts in global meeting dynamics.

Concerns about the repercussions of recent U.S. government policies are also evident, with 54% of business travel professionals worried about increased travel costs and 46% citing difficulties with visa processing as major issues. Interestingly, global airfares have seen a slight decline of about $17, or 2.2%, year-to-date, according to FCM Consulting.

Despite the challenges, Neufang underscored that the global business travel market is projected to surpass $1.6 trillion by the end of 2025, provided recent developments do not detrimentally affect global travel overall. By 2028, the Global Business Travel Association expects the market to exceed $2 trillion. Although business travel volumes have yet to return to pre-pandemic levels, spending rebounded in 2024, bolstered by inflation.

Neufang also suggested that trade disputes could inadvertently boost business travel in the short term. "During times of trade wars, business travel may actually increase for a period — as companies seek new partners and markets," she explained. However, she cautioned that elevated tariffs could harm U.S. travel prospects, while routes between Europe, Asia, and Africa may remain relatively stable.

Leisure travel to the United States has taken a hit, with international visitor spending expected to decline by 4.7% from 2024, equating to a projected loss of approximately $8.5 billion for the U.S. travel industry in a year that many had anticipated would see growth.

As the industry grapples with uncertainty, stakeholders remain hopeful that strategic shifts and emerging markets may provide new opportunities amid the challenges.
