Murlidhar Jalan Terminus Opens, Transforming Dibrugarh’s Bus Network
The Murlidhar Jalan Bus Terminus (MJBT) began formal operations on Monday as Dibrugarh’s primary bus hub, with the city’s Bus and Traveller Stand relocated to the facility beside AT Road (NH‑37) near the Convoy Road Flyover. District Commissioner Bikram Kairi issued the order on June 16, moving services to the terminus that had remained largely underused despite its proximity to Dibrugarh Railway Station at Banipur.
Until now, most intercity and long‑distance buses routinely bypassed the MJBT and stopped inside the city, leaving the terminus idle. To ensure a smooth first day, officials from the police, district administration, transport department and Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation were deployed at the site to monitor traffic flow and passenger facilities and to assist commuters.
Under the new directive, buses will not be permitted to enter the city beyond the MJBT; school and college buses are exempt from this restriction. The district transport officer has been instructed to arrange adequate feeder services at the terminus to provide last‑mile connectivity, while Dibrugarh traffic police have issued a dedicated route map and advisory for operators.
Authorities have urged commuters and transport operators to use the MJBT for all travel‑related services and to cooperate during the transition. Violations of the order will be punishable under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the administration said.
The decision was prompted by upcoming infrastructure works, chiefly the construction of the Amolapatty Junction Flyover, which is expected to worsen city congestion. The public works (roads) department warned that the proposed service road would be suitable only for light motor vehicles and two‑wheelers, making the movement of heavy vehicles inside the city unsafe and unmanageable. Ongoing construction of the Mancotta Road Flyover further complicates traffic management.
Officials framed the MJBT relocation as a preventive measure to keep heavy vehicles and buses out of the city centre during these major road projects, while providing structured boarding, alighting and feeder connections at the terminus.
