"Gaurav Gogoi Condemns Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Arms Licence Decision: A Dangerous Leap Towards Lawlessness in Assam!"
Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi has sharply criticized the decision by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government to issue arms licenses to indigenous residents in the state. Describing this move as a “dangerous step backwards,” Gogoi concerns it could lead to “lawlessness and jungle raj.” He urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to immediately reconsider the decision and prioritize rebuilding trust with the public through responsible leadership.
On May 28, Chief Minister Sarma announced that the Assam government would provide arms licenses to indigenous people in “vulnerable and remote” areas to foster a sense of security. During a press conference in Guwahati, he explained that the decision arose from a cabinet meeting aimed at addressing the heightened demands for security from residents in these regions. Sarma noted that Assamese people have felt increasingly insecure and have long requested the ability to obtain arms licenses, particularly in light of recent tensions in Bangladesh and the government’s ongoing initiatives against suspected foreign nationals.
Gogoi, who also serves as the deputy leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, expressed deep disapproval on social media platform X. He emphasized that the people of Assam deserve job opportunities, affordable healthcare, and quality education rather than access to firearms. “Instead of bolstering police and border forces, the government seems fixated on arming individuals who may have ties to BJP-RSS sympathizers and local criminal syndicates, which could exacerbate gang violence and personal vendettas,” he stated. Gogoi also raised concerns that local businesses and traders could face harassment as a result of this policy.
“This is not governance; it is a reckless regression towards chaos,” Gogoi asserted. He called for the Chief Minister to reverse the decision, underscoring that it reflects electoral motivations rather than genuine public concern.
In defending the initiative, Sarma reiterated the context of insecurity felt in some communities and affirmed that those eligible for arms licenses would need to be original inhabitants from recognized indigenous groups residing in vulnerable areas. He claimed this measure would empower local residents, aiming to offer them additional courage during uncertain times.
The debate surrounding the arms licensing decision has sparked various opinions and raised questions about public safety and governance in Assam. As both sides continue to voice their perspectives, the focus shifts to how this policy may impact the social fabric and security dynamics within the state.
As the situation evolves, it will be crucial to monitor developments and assess the broader implications of this decision on community relations, safety, and governance in Assam. The discussion reflects the complexities of balancing security and civil rights in a region that has seen its share of unrest and calls for greater support and stability amidst changing circumstances.
