Residents of Tirupattur municipality took to the streets on Wednesday, blocking the Salem-Vaniyambadi High Road in protest against the local government’s failure to address the clogged underground drainage system. The persistent blockage has led to sewage overflowing onto the roads, particularly during rain, exacerbating public health risks for the community, notably affecting children and senior citizens.
C. Pavithra, a local resident, highlighted the severity of the issue, stating, “Clogging of underground drains has been a significant problem in the town for the past few years. The stagnant sewage is a breeding ground for mosquitoes.” Residents express frustration as the municipality has not maintained regular cleaning of the manholes, allowing excess rainwater mixed with sewage to accumulate on the streets.
Following the protest, officials from the Tirupattur police, along with revenue and municipal staff, arrived at the scene to calm the angry residents. S. Santhi, the Commissioner of Tirupattur municipality, assured the public that municipal workers have been instructed to clear the drains and that regular inspections of the drainage systems would be implemented.
This ongoing issue raises concerns about health and sanitation in the area, reflecting the community’s urgent demand for effective action from municipal authorities.
