Startups in Crisis: 300 Jobs Lost as Quick Commerce Takes a Toll

The grocery startup Otipy, based in Delhi-NCR, has abruptly shut down its operations, according to media reports. The company has yet to issue an official statement regarding its closure. Employees learned of this decision during a town hall meeting led by Otipy’s founder and CEO, Varun Khurana. Approximately 300 employees now find their jobs at risk, and the company’s delivery partners are also facing challenges as the app has ceased functioning, displaying a message indicating no service is available at any entered location.

The rapid rise of quick commerce companies is believed to be a major factor behind Otipy’s downfall. These companies have transformed the market landscape by offering quick deliveries, often within 10 minutes. This shift has adversely affected scheduled delivery services like Otipy’s and traditional grocery store sales, significantly impacting the viability of the business.

Otipy operated on a B2B2C model, sourcing fresh produce directly from farmers and delivering it through community resellers. Launched in June 2020 as a subsidiary of Crofarm Agriproducts, Otipy conducted its business primarily in Delhi-NCR and Mumbai. To date, the company has raised nearly $44 million, with $32 million coming in 2022 from investors including WestBridge Capital. Recently, Otipy also secured a $2 million loan from Nuvama Asset Management.

Despite a reported revenue increase-Rs 164 crores in FY24, up from Rs 115 crores the previous year-the company continued to face significant losses and was behind on payments to both employees and vendors. Otipy’s closure highlights the dramatic shifts occurring within the online grocery market, particularly as the quick commerce sector continues to grow. Industry reports suggest that this market expanded from $300 million in FY22 to an anticipated $7.1 billion by FY25.
