IMD Issues Urgent Red Alert for Severe Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms in Maharashtra

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast for heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas across coastal and South Interior Karnataka, Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra today. Over the next two to three days, regions such as Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Gangetic West Bengal, Mahe, Marathwada, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Odisha, and various northeastern states are also expected to experience significant rainfall.

A red alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms has been declared in nine districts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Mumbai Suburban, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Pune, Ahmednagar, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. In light of these conditions, the state government has urged residents to follow weather advisories and avoid unnecessary outings.

Additionally, the IMD has predicted thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Odisha, and West Bengal over the coming days. Himachal Pradesh is anticipated to face a hailstorm, while western Rajasthan may see heat waves and dust storms during the day.

In a notable development, the Southwest Monsoon arrived in Telangana yesterday, nearly two weeks ahead of its expected schedule. The IMD reported that the monsoon has already affected parts of seven districts, including Mahbubnagar, and is likely to spread throughout the entire state within a day or two, provided that current weather patterns continue.

Typically, the Southwest Monsoon reaches Telangana around June 10. The IMD attributes this year’s early arrival to favorable meteorological factors, including rainfall trends, wind patterns, solar radiation, and moisture transport from neighboring regions.
