Urgent Crackdown: 150 Suspected Bangladeshis Under Investigation
GUWAHATI: The Assam government has intensified its crackdown on individuals suspected of being illegal immigrants, particularly targeting people from Bangladesh. Since yesterday, police have apprehended over 150 suspected Bangladeshi nationals in Guwahati and surrounding areas.
These individuals are currently being interrogated at the Police Reserve in Rupnagar, where their citizenship documents are also under scrutiny. Police sources indicate that most arrests have occurred in neighborhoods such as Hatigaon, Garchuk, Dispur, Sonapur, Noonmati, Jalukbari, Palasbari, Jaleswar, Gumi, and Chhaygaon.
The interrogation and document verification processes are being overseen by three Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) from Guwahati, alongside a border DCP. Authorities have noted that among those detained may be individuals previously labeled as foreigners by tribunals and currently on bail.
Tensions have escalated at the police reserve as relatives of the detained have gathered, expressing their frustration by chanting slogans against the government. Some detainees assert that they are Indian citizens and feel they are facing undue harassment concerning their nationality status.
According to police reports, the citizenship documents of six individuals from the Hatigaon area were found to be legitimate, while from a group of 17 apprehended in Garchuk, four were retained and the remaining 13 were released.
