Unleashing Potential: France and Vietnam Forge Powerful Airbus and Satellite Deals During Macron’s Inspiring Hanoi Visit

Vietnam and France strengthened their ties on May 26, 2025, with the signing of a significant deal during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Hanoi. The agreement includes the purchase of 20 Airbus planes and several other collaborative pacts aimed at enhancing France’s influence in Vietnam, particularly in light of recent tensions arising from U.S. trade policies.

This marks Macron’s first official visit to Vietnam, a historic occasion as it’s the first by a French president in nearly a decade. The backdrop to this diplomatic engagement is a looming threat from U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently proposed imposing a 50% tariff on EU goods starting in June, stirring apprehensions within the European Union.

Vietnam, an export-driven economy, is under pressure from the U.S. to accept more American products. In response, it has made commitments in ongoing trade discussions aimed at avoiding hefty tariffs that could obstruct its economic progress. This has raised concerns in Europe about potential imbalances that might arise from such negotiations.

During his visit, Macron announced various agreements, including those focused on nuclear energy, railway collaboration, and healthcare with Sanofi vaccines. In a joint press conference where questions were not permitted, Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to ensuring freedom of navigation-a crucial matter for Vietnam amid ongoing territorial disputes with China in the South China Sea. He also emphasized the significance of enhanced defense cooperation between the two nations.

Vietnamese President Luong Cuong highlighted that the defense partnership would include the sharing of strategic information and bolster collaboration in defense manufacturing, cybersecurity, and counter-terrorism efforts. Historically, France controlled Vietnam for around 70 years until their expulsion in 1954, following a significant military defeat at Dien Bien Phu. However, relations have warmed considerably since then, culminating in the elevation of their partnership to Vietnam’s highest diplomatic status last year.

Macron’s trip also encompasses other Southeast Asian destinations, including Indonesia and Singapore. He is set to visit a university in Hanoi on Tuesday before continuing to Jakarta. The deal with Airbus for the purchase of A330neo wide-body aircraft by VietJet follows a previous agreement for 20 planes last year. This procurement underscores Airbus’s dominance in the Vietnamese market, where it supplies an impressive 86% of the fleet, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Additionally, an agreement for cooperation in earth-observation satellite technology strengthens the partnership between Airbus Defence and Vietnam. Previous discussions have revolved around replacing a satellite launched in 2013, developed by Airbus’s predecessor, EADS.

As Vietnam navigates its relationship with the United States, there are signals regarding the potential acquisition of at least 250 Boeing aircraft by national carrier Vietnam Airlines and its competitor VietJet. Both nations acknowledge that such actions could help Vietnam mitigate its substantial trade surplus with the U.S. and potentially appease the Trump administration’s trade stance. However, European officials caution that Vietnam should be mindful not to jeopardize its relations with the European Union, which remains a crucial trade partner.

In summary, this visit not only cements Franco-Vietnamese relations but also underscores the intricate balance Vietnam must maintain amid competing trade interests between major global powers.
