Thanjavur’s Horticulture Heroes Unite to Combat Coconut Wilt Disease: A Bold Action for a Thriving Future!

Coconut farmers in Ponnavarayankottai village, Pattukottai, recently faced a significant challenge as sap began oozing from the base of their coconut trees, alongside other alarming symptoms. This prompted an urgent response from the Horticulture Department in Thanjavur and scientists from the Coconut Research Board based at Veppankulam Station. A field survey confirmed the troubling diagnosis: the emergence of ‘Thanjavur wilt’ disease, a recurring issue in the region, particularly during the summer months.

In response to this discovery, local block-level officers were directed to conduct inspections across all affected areas. The Coconut Research Board then issued a comprehensive advisory detailing the disease’s characteristics and management practices. Predominantly affecting sandy coastal groves that are poorly maintained, early indicators of Thanjavur wilt include sap oozing up to three feet from the tree’s base, trunk discoloration, yellowing fronds, decay at the root level, and premature nut drop. In severe cases, farmers may also notice signs of beetle infestations and fungal growth near the base of the trees.

Thanjavur wilt is caused by Ganoderma lucidum, a fungus that can spread through soil and water and persist in the environment for extended periods. To manage this disease, agricultural experts recommend the removal of infected trees and the avoidance of shared irrigation systems. Instead, the use of drip irrigation is encouraged to minimize water-related spread. Additionally, farmers are advised to apply a Bordeaux mixture around the roots and conduct quarterly hexaconazole root treatments to help combat the fungus effectively.

On Friday, the Horticulture Department organized an awareness camp in Ponnavarayankottai to educate farmers on recognizing disease symptoms and employing effective control measures. The event attracted participation from officials, scientists, and local farmers, including Deputy Director A. Venkataraman and experts from the Veppankulam research station. They conducted practical demonstrations that focused on early detection and the best practices for managing Thanjavur wilt.

The Horticulture Department is committed to enhancing disease management through targeted block-level demonstrations, emphasizing collaboration between scientists and farmers. This approach aims to promote proactive measures in combating the disease, ensuring the sustainability of coconut farming in the affected regions.

By staying informed and employing scientific recommendations, local farmers can better protect their crops from the threats posed by Thanjavur wilt. As awareness spreads and best practices are implemented, efforts to safeguard the livelihoods of coconut farmers in Pattukottai are more critical than ever. The active involvement of agricultural experts and the community signals hope for overcoming this agricultural challenge.

In the face of environmental adversity, initiatives like this awareness camp serve as a vital resource for farmers striving to maintain healthy coconut plantations. By fostering education and engagement, stakeholders can work together toward a promising future for coconut farming in the region.
