India Surpasses Japan: Unveiling the New Fourth Largest Economy
India’s economy has achieved a remarkable milestone, becoming the fourth largest in the world, surpassing Japan, according to B V R Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog. During a briefing for reporters following the 10th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog, Subrahmanyam noted that the current geopolitical and economic landscape is favorable for India. “We are the fourth largest economy as I speak. We are a USD 4 trillion economy as I speak,” he stated.
Referencing data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), he emphasized that India is now larger than Japan. “The only countries larger than India are the United States, China, and Germany. If we continue on our current path, within 2.5 to 3 years, we will likely become the third largest economy,” he added.
In response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments, which suggested that Apple iPhones sold in the U.S. should be manufactured in America rather than in India, Subrahmanyam remarked, “What the tariff will be is uncertain. Given the dynamics, we will remain a cost-effective place to manufacture.”
Furthermore, he announced that a second phase of asset monetization is in the works, with plans for its announcement set for August.
