Pobitora’s Tourist Surge: 14% Increase Fuels Revenue to Rs 81.45 Lakh!
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Guwahati, has recently experienced a 14% increase in tourist visits this season, underscoring its rising appeal among wildlife enthusiasts. However, the sanctuary will close its doors to visitors starting tomorrow as the monsoon season sets in.
In the 2024-25 season, Pobitora attracted 34,535 visitors, including 637 foreign tourists, a notable rise from the 30,305 visitors, comprising 541 foreigners, recorded the previous year. Along with the uptick in visitor numbers, revenue has also surged, jumping from Rs 54.17 lakh last year to Rs 81.45 lakh this year.
The sanctuary has maintained a poaching-free status since 2016, thanks to effective conservation efforts by the forest department and local authorities to protect its unique wildlife. Spanning 16 square kilometers, Pobitora is home to 107 one-horned rhinoceroses-30 females, 70 males, and 27 calves. The sanctuary’s anti-poaching measures have earned it widespread acclaim, with the last reported rhino poaching incident occurring in 2016.
Over the past nine years, there have been no further poaching incidents, reflecting strong administrative efforts in conservation. While Assam is best known for Kaziranga National Park, famous for its tiger and one-horned rhinoceros populations, Pobitora is establishing itself as an important habitat for these endangered species.
Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is now the third most visited national park in India. Between October 1, 2024, and May 18, 2025, it welcomed an impressive 443,636 visitors, marking a significant 35% increase from the previous year.
