Industry leaders have praised the Rising Northeast Investor Summit as a pivotal initiative that could unlock the vast economic potential of India’s northeastern region. Vineet Nahata, Director at Power Gilt Treasuries, highlighted the opportunities for growth and development in this area. He stated, “Thanks to the proactive policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, the region’s true capabilities are now being realized. The summit is designed to accelerate this growth by leveraging the region’s natural resources and skill development.”
Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barma, a Tripura royal and founder of the Tipra Motha Party, expressed optimism about the region’s economic prospects. He remarked, “If we can develop even 50 percent of the Northeast’s potential, it could become a major economic hub not just for India, but for the world.” He also countered recent comments from Bangladesh, which suggested that India’s Northeast relies on its maritime access, asserting that strong national support for investment was evident at the summit.
Deb Barma compared the strategic significance of the Northeast with other regions, stating, “While the West has countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan facing developmental challenges, the East features dynamic economies like Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. Continued focus on the Northeast could bring about a transformational shift.”
Harpreet Singh, President of the Northeast Transport Association, commended the joint efforts of the central government and the chief ministers of the eight northeastern states. He emphasized that the region is prepared for rapid development in the coming years due to focused attention on infrastructure and connectivity.
The Rising Northeast Investor Summit was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who referred to the Northeast as India’s ‘Digital Gateway.’ During his address, he shared the government’s vision and achievements in education and skill development within the region. “Over the past decade, more than ₹21,000 crore has been invested in the Northeast’s education system. Approximately 850 new schools and nine new medical colleges have been established, along with a campus of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in Mizoram. Nearly 200 new skill development institutes have also been set up,” he stated.
The Prime Minister underscored the cultural richness of the region, describing the Northeast as “a vibrant reflection of India’s diversity.” He added, “From trade to tradition, from textiles to tourism, the diversity of the Northeast is one of its greatest strengths.” Modi reiterated that India is on a path to becoming a developed nation by 2047, with the growth of eastern India, particularly the Northeast, playing a crucial role in realizing that vision.
