Tripura Connectivity Stays Strong Amid Assam’s Badarpur Bridge Closure
Following maintenance and rehabilitation work on a crucial bridge in Badarpur, South Assam, officials have assured that vehicle movement to Tripura will not likely be interrupted. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has announced a temporary suspension of vehicular traffic for two months to facilitate major repairs on the bridge, widely known as Gammon Bridge.
Tripura’s Transport Secretary, C. K. Jamatia, stated over the phone from New Delhi that the ongoing bridge repairs over the Barak River are expected to have minimal impact on Tripura, despite NHIDCL’s suspension of traffic on the Assam-Agartala national highway. “As per the latest report, vehicles are returning to the state as scheduled. An alternative route, Silchar–Kalain-Guwahati, remains open for traffic,” he added.
He emphasized that traffic on the national highway has not completely ceased, with reports suggesting continued movement in certain areas. NHIDCL’s Managing Director, Krishan Kumar, officially declared the suspension of vehicle movement at Badarpur on May 20 to execute significant repair works over the Barak River.
According to the official order, issued under sections 31 and 33 of the Control of National Highways (Land & Traffic) Act, 2002, the bridge’s closure is mandated for a period of 60 days, from May 21 to July 20, 2025. This bridge, part of National Highway 6, serves as a vital connection between Tripura and the rest of the country via Assam and Meghalaya.
