External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has emphasized the complicity of the Pakistani government and military in fostering a terror infrastructure, warning that India will impose serious consequences if terrorist attacks persist from across the border. During interviews with Dutch media on May 19 and 20, published recently, he stated that India seeks a “definitive end” to terrorism and dismissed any notions of third-party mediation, including involvement from U.S. President Donald Trump, in the recent ceasefire that followed military actions against Pakistan.
Jaishankar made these statements during a visit to The Hague as part of a three-nation tour that included Denmark and Germany. His remarks followed President Trump’s repeated claims of having facilitated the cessation of hostilities during discussions with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier that week.
In response to questions regarding the role of the Pakistani government in terrorism, Jaishankar stated unequivocally, “I am not suggesting that, I am stating that. Would you argue that a government is unaware of large military centers in a city like Amsterdam? Of course not.” He added that prominent terrorists listed by the United Nations operate in Pakistan’s major cities, making it clear that the state, including its military, is deeply involved.
Addressing the ceasefire, which temporarily halted military actions between the two nations, he noted, “We want a definitive end to terrorism. If attacks from Pakistan continue, there will be consequences.” He reiterated that India’s government would respond decisively to any future attacks.
In an interview with Dutch broadcaster NOS, Jaishankar asserted that if terrorist actions occur, India will respond accordingly, highlighting that the military operations aim to target terrorists directly, not to engage in reciprocal fire.
When asked about resolving the Kashmir issue, Jaishankar reiterated that terrorism is an unacceptable international crime that cannot be brushed aside. He mentioned the attack’s impact on Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism industry and reinforced that India claims rightful ownership over parts of Kashmir currently under Pakistan’s control.
Responding to whether international mediation is possible concerning Kashmir, he firmly stated, “No, it is a bilateral issue between the countries involved.” Pressed on whether India would reject Trump’s offer of assistance, he clarified that any resolution must be a direct discussion between India and Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of mutual communication from the military leadership of both nations.
Jaishankar expressed India’s willingness to discuss the return of the illegally occupied regions of Kashmir and issues related to terrorism. He drew attention to the significant security threats facing India from its borders with both China and Pakistan, stating that security and economic growth are interconnected. He asserted that prioritizing security is essential for sustainable economic prosperity.
While in The Hague, Jaishankar was preparing for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s previously scheduled visit to strengthen bilateral relations, which was postponed due to escalating tensions with Pakistan. In Berlin, while chairing a conference with Indian ambassadors, he focused on combating terrorism and enhancing engagement with European nations amidst evolving global dynamics, emphasizing a “zero tolerance” policy towards terrorism.
