Tripura CM Declares Tough Stance on Illegal Immigration Policies
Agartala, May 21 (IANS): Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has reiterated the state’s firm stance against illegal immigration from Bangladesh and Myanmar, stating that no unauthorized individuals will be allowed to enter Indian territory. He emphasized that any infiltrators from neighboring countries will be repelled according to legal protocols.
Speaking with the media after distributing offer letters to newly recruited Food Inspectors at Pragna Bhavan, Saha, who also oversees the Home portfolio, asserted that the Border Security Force (BSF) and local police are on high alert against any illegal crossings. He noted that security forces are actively monitoring the border situation.
Saha’s remarks follow a directive from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, which set a 30-day deadline for states to verify the status of suspected illegal immigrants claiming Indian citizenship and initiate deportation if necessary.
“We are very clear on this. No Bangladeshi or Rohingya will be allowed to enter Tripura or any part of India. Infiltrators will be returned as per the law,” he stated.
Tripura shares an 856 km border with Bangladesh, which places it in a vulnerable position regarding cross-border migration. The Chief Minister indicated that he had recently urged state security officials to collaborate closely on border issues, particularly amid rising tensions in the region involving India and Pakistan.
“We continue to act under the guidance of the Central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar,” Saha said. He assured the public that the situation in Tripura is normal, without any cause for alarm.
A BSF official confirmed that border patrols have heightened vigilance in response to unrest in the neighboring nation since last year. “Our security measures have intensified following the Pahalgam terror attack and in light of ongoing tensions,” the official noted, indicating that senior BSF personnel conduct regular checks in border areas to ensure security.
