Radiocentre Calls for News Bulletins on BBC’s New DAB+ Ventures

In a move that’s sending ripples through the radio waves, Radiocentre has knocked on Ofcom’s door, urging them to mandate mandatory news bulletins on the BBC’s shiny new national DAB+ radio stations. The BBC is gearing up to launch three brand new offerings: the upbeat Radio 1 Dance, the nostalgic Radio 1 Anthems, and the soothing Radio 3 Unwind. While whispers of approval are in the air for these dusty music channels, plans for a potential Radio 2 offshoot, steeped in the golden grooves of the 50s, 60s, and 70s, seem destined to hit a wall.

Last week, Radiocentre submitted their thoughts on Ofcom’s consultation, fully backing the regulator’s decision to halt the Radio 2 expansion, reinforcing concerns over market competition. But they didn’t stop there, darling! The organization, which represents a bevy of more than 50 stakeholders and boasts a hefty 90 percent of UK commercial radio listening, is clamoring for extra license conditions on the three new services to ramp up their public value.

The buzz has reached the hallowed halls of Parliament, where MPs grilled Ofcom’s Chief Executive, Dame Melanie Dawes, alongside Chairman Lord Grade, over the absence of news content in these proposed offerings. Radiocentre’s sharp-tongued CEO, Matt Payton, stated with flair that if Ofcom gives the green light for the BBC’s dance party of stations, it’s only fair to expect guaranteed news updates alongside their infectious beats.

"Listeners have a right to reliable news from their radio,” he emphasized, with a twinkle of urgency. “To launch these stations without such essential content would be nothing short of a serious oversight."

As the airwaves prepare for this new chapter, Radiocentre’s call for news is a reminder that while music may soothe the soul, staying connected with the world is what truly keeps our hearts beating in rhythm.
