BJP Urges Urgent Restoration of Water Supply in Gangtok for Residents
GANGTOK: The state BJP has called for the immediate restoration of drinking water supply to the residents of Gangtok amid a severe crisis that has left many struggling. As Sikkim celebrates the 50th anniversary of its integration into India, the capital is facing a crisis that highlights significant governance failures. The BJP criticized repeated interruptions in water service, unannounced maintenance work, such as water tank cleaning, and inadequate communication, all of which have adversely affected daily life for both locals and tourists.
The BJP party further emphasized that this drinking water crisis is taking a heavy toll on healthcare services. The dialysis unit at New STNM Hospital is operating at minimal capacity due to the water shortage. This situation has forced many patients to forego essential treatments or rely on expensive private options, jeopardizing lives in the process.
Residents of Gangtok are urgently demanding action. They seek not only the immediate restoration of a consistent drinking water supply but also timely and clear communication regarding any service interruptions. They also call for the comprehensive restoration of the dialysis unit with sufficient staff and resources, along with a thorough investigation into the governance failures that led to the current situation.
“This crisis serves as a stark reminder that milestone celebrations ring hollow when citizens are deprived of one of life’s most basic needs—clean drinking water,” remarked a spokesperson for the Sikkim BJP.
