Conrad’s Pledge: A New Era of Welfare for Tangmang Residents
Conrad K Sangma made history on Saturday as the first sitting Chief Minister to visit Tangmang village, located in the Pynursla sub-division of East Khasi Hills. His visit was marked by the announcement of substantial welfare initiatives aimed at enhancing the rural community’s quality of life. Tangmang, a village with a rich history of over two centuries, was founded by settlers who sought refuge from a disastrous earthquake. The name ‘Tangmang’ translates to ‘precisely right’ or ‘adequately sufficient’ in Khasi, reflecting its cultural significance.
The village is renowned for its stunning landscapes, featuring cascading waterfalls and rivers that ultimately flow into the plains of Bangladesh. It is also a vibrant hub for traditional bamboo craftsmanship and intricate weaving. During his visit, Conrad received a warm welcome from locals and expressed his admiration for their exceptional skills in craftsmanship, particularly in bamboo products and handicrafts. Following this appreciation, he directed his officials to purchase these local crafts in bulk, intending to present them as unique gifts to visiting dignitaries and high-ranking officials.
“This is a memorable visit,” Conrad remarked. He emphasized that government development should be holistic, advocating for investments in both major infrastructure projects and initiatives that directly improve the lives of citizens. He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening the rural economy through various activities, stating that supporting artisans and weavers is a central goal of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government. Through multiple welfare schemes, including backing for self-help groups (SHGs) and village organizations, his administration aims to empower local communities and enhance livelihoods significantly.
In a bid to further boost the local economy and promote skill development, the Chief Minister announced the establishment of a handicraft training center in Tangmang. This center will feature modern infrastructure, machinery, and accommodations for trainees, allowing them to learn directly from master craftsmen within the village.
Additionally, during his visit, the Chief Minister engaged with the villagers in a ‘CM-Connect’ session, attentively listening to their concerns and facilitating a direct communication channel between the government and the community.
