Manipur: 8 Insurgents Captured in Major Anti-Extortion Crackdown
Security forces in Manipur conducted a series of coordinated operations across the state from May 15 to May 16, 2025, targeting insurgent groups involved in extortion and recruitment. These intelligence-led actions resulted in the arrest of several operatives associated with banned organizations, including the KCP (PWG), PREPAK (Pro), UNLF (P), and the Chin Kuki National Defence Force (CKNDF). This marked a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to enhance security in the region.
On May 16, security personnel apprehended Ningthoukhongjam Malemnganba Meitei, a prominent member of KCP (PWG), in the Imphal West District. He was arrested at Sagolsem Lampak, Langthabal Kunja Mayai Leikai on charges related to extortion. During the arrest, officers seized a mobile phone and a black side bag containing ₹720, underscoring law enforcement’s determination to combat financial crimes linked to militant activities.
That same day, two other KCP (PWG) operatives, Lambalmayum Bobo Meetei and Yumnam Chandra Meetei, were detained in Imphal East at Yourbung and Sawombung, respectively. Their arrest was also connected to extortion activities. Police recovered two mobile phones, two Aadhaar cards, and ₹2,780, highlighting the financial structures that support these insurgent operations.
In another related arrest, Oinam Milan Singh, an operative of PREPAK (Pro), was taken into custody in Imphal East for extortion and issuing threats. Singh was found in possession of a vehicle and two mobile phones, indicating the diverse methods insurgents utilize to exert influence and gather resources in the area.
Additionally, operations against the Chin Kuki National Defence Force (CKNDF) led to the arrest of Thongkhohou Touthang in the Churachandpur District on May 15. Touthang is accused of recruiting local youth for armed insurgency and facilitating cross-border operations, making his arrest a significant blow to the group’s recruitment efforts. A mobile phone and a SIM card were also confiscated during this operation.
The enforcement efforts extended to Thoubal District, where Hijam Jiten, an operative of UNLF (P), was arrested for extorting funds from educational institutions. Authorities recovered a two-wheeler and a mobile phone as part of this operation, reflecting the broad range of targets that insurgents pursue for financing.
In Bishnupur District, Ningthoujam Abungte Singh, affiliated with PREPAK (Pro), was arrested for allegedly recruiting youth for operations in Myanmar. This arrest is crucial for disrupting the pipeline that supports the insurgency’s manpower needs. A mobile phone was seized, reinforcing the role of technology in these insurgent activities.
