
Hadi Matar Sentenced to 25 Years for Attack on Salman Rushdie
An American-Lebanese man, Hadi Matar, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for his knife attack on author Salman Rushdie during a cultural event in New York in 2022. The 27-year-old Matar was convicted of attempted murder and assault, receiving the maximum sentence for the brutal attack that has left Mr. Rushdie blind in one eye. In addition to the 25-year sentence, Matar received a further seven years for assaulting the event’s moderator. He still faces separate federal terrorism charges that could potentially lead to a life sentence. Although Mr. Rushdie did not attend the sentencing, he submitted a victim impact statement, highlighting the profound effects of the assault on his life.
