Guwahati, May 17: In a significant achievement against cybercrime and national security threats, the Assam Police Special Task Force (STF) has arrested seven individuals as part of a coordinated effort with Gajraj Military Intelligence and police units from Rajasthan and Telangana. This operation, dubbed Operation Ghost SIM, was initiated after intelligence indicated that counterfeit SIM cards issued across Assam, Rajasthan, and Telangana were being used for cybercrimes and the acquisition of sensitive information by foreign operatives, notably handlers located in Pakistan. Authorities have confiscated 948 counterfeit SIM cards along with multiple technical devices believed to be used for cybercriminal activities and unauthorized communications during synchronized raids across five districts in the three states. These operations commenced on the afternoon of May 16, following the filing of a case on May 14 at the STF Police Station in Assam. The arrested individuals face multiple charges, including violations of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and the Information Technology Act, underscoring the seriousness of the crimes. Additionally, 14 more individuals were detained in Dhubri district, with police confirming that further actions will follow post-interrogation. Initial investigations suggest that the fake SIM cards were procured using forged documents and distributed via illegal channels. Digital forensics teams are currently examining the seized evidence. As the investigation continues, authorities anticipate more arrests and new developments in this high-profile case.
