Ravi Shastri Opens Up About Virat Kohli’s Shocking Test Retirement
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri shared insights on Thursday regarding his conversation with Virat Kohli prior to the star batter’s unexpected retirement from Test cricket. Shastri revealed that Kohli expressed he had no regrets about his career and felt he had contributed fully to the long format of the game for his country.
Kohli announced the end of his Test career on May 12, just as India was gearing up for a five-Test tour of England in June. He leaves behind an impressive legacy, having scored 9,230 runs—making him the fourth-highest run-scorer among Indian Test players—and achieving 30 Test centuries.
Shastri, who partnered with Kohli during one of the most successful periods in Indian Test cricket history, confirmed that Kohli reached out to him before making his decision public. “I spoke to him about a week before he announced it, and his mind was very clear that he had given everything,” Shastri told Sanjana Ganesan in The ICC Review. “There were no regrets. He expressed that there were no doubts in his mind, which made me think, ‘Yes, the time is right. The mind has told his body that it’s time to go.’”
Kohli is India’s most successful Test captain, boasting 40 wins from 68 matches—13 more than the second-best, MS Dhoni. Shastri noted that Kohli’s intense, passionate approach to cricket has its limits. He observed that Kohli’s commitment meant he often felt he had to shoulder an overwhelming amount of responsibility during matches. “When the team goes out, it seems like he has to take all the wickets, make all the catches, and make all the decisions on the field. This level of involvement can lead to burnout if he doesn’t pace himself and compartmentalize his playing across formats.”
Shastri highlighted the toll of Kohli’s immense stardom and the scrutiny that came with it. “He has garnered accolades worldwide and has a larger fan base than any cricketer in the past decade,” Shastri said, acknowledging that Kohli’s intensity created a complicated relationship with viewers. “He could easily get under people’s skin. His celebrated approach was infectious, captivating not just those in the dressing room but also fans at home.”
Nonetheless, Shastri admitted being taken aback by Kohli’s decision to retire, mentioning he believed Kohli had at least two to three years left in him. “However, mental exhaustion can signal the body to stop; you might be physically fit, but if your mind is overwhelmed, your body listens,” he said.
During the Shastri-Kohli era, India achieved historic milestones, including its first Test series win in Australia, consecutive series victories in the West Indies, and breaking a 22-year win drought in Sri Lanka. The team also performed competitively in South Africa and England, challenging those nations in conditions typically unfavorable to sub-continental teams.
Shastri credited Kohli for his contributions to these successes, noting, “When players retire, they may look back and wish they had accomplished more. But Kohli has done it all—he’s captained teams, won World Cups, and even clinched an Under-19 World Cup in 2008. There’s nothing left for him to achieve.”
