Indian Union Upholds Commitment to Sikkim: A Promising Future Ahead
Governor Om Prakash Mathur warmly greeted the people of Sikkim on the occasion of the state’s 50th Statehood Day, emphasizing that this golden jubilee signifies more than a celebration; it represents a pivotal milestone in the collective journey of the state’s citizens and institutions. He reflected on how, when Sikkim became the 22nd state of the Indian Union on May 16, 1975, it was welcomed with open arms and a promise of unwavering support that has since been fulfilled.
Over the past five decades, Sikkim has transformed remarkably, evolving from geographical isolation and limited infrastructure into a beacon of development, sustainability, and inclusive progress, according to Mathur. The Governor recognized the substantial advancements made across various sectors, attributing them to the consistent backing from the Government of India alongside the commitment of local leadership and citizens.
In terms of healthcare, Mathur noted that in 1975, Sikkim’s medical infrastructure was minimal, with high infant and maternal mortality rates. Currently, the STNM Multi-Speciality Hospital in Gangtok offers advanced services including neurosurgery and surgical oncology, with an expansive healthcare network that comprises four district hospitals and numerous health centers. Statistics from the latest National Family Health Survey reveal that 96.5% of births in Sikkim are registered, and infant mortality rates have plummeted to just five per 1,000 live births.
Moreover, Sikkim’s connectivity issues have seen significant improvement, transitioning from a modest 1,200-kilometer road network to well-maintained roads that link all villages. The development of Pakyong Airport is ongoing, with efforts being made to enhance flight operations. Additionally, the Sevoke–Rangpo Railway Line’s Phase I is set for completion by December 2026, further bolstering regional integration.
Mathur expressed that Sikkim’s progress is reflected not merely in statistics, but in the lives that have been positively affected. He urged everyone to embrace the national vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, which is vital not just as a goal but as a pledge for the future. He called on the community to remain united, to inspire youth, and to sustain economic growth while celebrating their rich heritage.
In a heartfelt message, he acknowledged the contributions of farmers, educators, soldiers, and all sectors of society, asserting that this progress belongs to them. Mathur concluded by extending gratitude to the Government of India for its continuous support of Sikkim.
