President Trump Engages in Crucial Talks with Qatari Emir
US President Donald Trump held discussions with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha this evening, marking the first visit by a sitting US President to Qatar in over two decades. This meeting took place during Trump’s three-nation tour of West Asia, following his earlier engagements in Saudi Arabia. Earlier in the day, Trump participated in a summit with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Riyadh, where he reiterated America’s commitment to its strategic partnership in the region.
On the sidelines of the summit, Trump met with Syria’s interim President, Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former Islamist rebel leader. This meeting followed Trump’s recent announcement concerning the lifting of sanctions on Syria. During their discussion, Trump invited al-Sharaa to join the Abraham Accords, a US-led initiative aimed at normalizing relations between West Asian nations and Israel. He also indicated that the US plans to include more countries in this framework in the future.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia attended the meeting, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan participated remotely. Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia included the signing of a remarkable $142 billion defense sales agreement, part of a broader Saudi commitment to invest $600 billion in the United States. Following his stop in Qatar, Trump is set to continue his trip to the United Arab Emirates tomorrow.
