Congress Demands Accountability: PM’s Silence on US Ceasefire Role Sparks Outrage
Accusing the BJP of politicizing Operation Sindoor, the Congress announced on Wednesday plans to hold “Jai Hind” rallies across the nation. These rallies aim to question Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the alleged role of the US in the India-Pakistan ceasefire, as stated by US President Donald Trump. In response, the BJP stated that Operation Sindoor is ongoing and urged Congress and other opposition parties to refrain from raising unnecessary questions.
At a press conference following a meeting of the Congress’s top leadership, communication in-charge Jairam Ramesh articulated the party’s stance: “We have never done politics on security. The PM is meeting NDA Chief Ministers. Why doesn’t he meet other CMs? What is the fault of the Karnataka CM or the West Bengal CM? They are CMs. If this is not politicization, then what is?”
During the meeting, Congress adopted a resolution stating that the abrupt end to India’s retaliatory actions against Pakistan has “left behind a trail of unanswered questions.” The resolution criticized the government’s silence on this matter as “inexplicable and unacceptable.” It emphasized that past Indian governments have consistently maintained that Kashmir is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan, and Trump’s assertion has internationalized a topic that should remain within bilateral frameworks.
The meeting included notable Congress leaders such as Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, party general secretary K C Venugopal, and senior figures Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Sachin Pilot, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
Ramesh claimed that there is “maximum silence on real issues, maximum politicization” from PM Modi, indicating that the party would hold rallies in various states in the coming days. He shared that Rahul Gandhi would host a press conference in Delhi on Friday to discuss various issues.
“We will ask direct questions to the PM from the people. In these rallies, we will demand answers from him and question why he remains silent. Why doesn’t the PM take the country into confidence regarding America’s role? Trump has once again stated that he mediated. Why is the PM silent?” Ramesh stated.
Congress media chairman Pawan Khera questioned if the ceasefire conditions included a clause to return terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack, asking, “Did you set the condition with Pakistan that these individuals would be handed over?”
Reacting to Congress’s claims, BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi urged the opposition to “walk the talk” regarding their support of the BJP-led Centre in Operation Sindoor. He pointed out that the Modi government has not used the term “ceasefire” and has clearly stated that matters regarding Pakistan-occupied Kashmir can only be resolved through bilateral talks.
“If you claim to support the government, it should reflect in your actions. Operation Sindoor is still ongoing. Let the ‘full stop’ come. If you still have doubts or want a session of Parliament once it’s concluded, that is understandable. However, raising questions during active operations shows that support for the government is merely superficial,” he concluded.
