“Expect Hefty Downpours: Tamil Nadu Braces for Rainy Surprises Starting May 14!”
Rain lashed National Highway at Ratnagiri in Ranipet district on May 8, 2025, as residents brace for a shift in weather patterns. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has indicated that increased rainfall is expected across Tamil Nadu starting May 14, with heavy showers predicted for areas along the Western Ghats and interior regions lasting three days from Wednesday.
In the lead-up to this anticipated rain, many parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are experiencing an oppressive heatwave, with temperatures hovering two to three degrees Celsius above the seasonal average. High humidity and soaring temperatures are creating discomfort for residents in several areas, including Chennai. On Monday, the city of Madurai recorded the state’s highest temperature of 41 degrees Celsius, while Erode and Karur Paramathi also reported temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
B. Amudha, Head (additional in-charge) at the RMC, shared insights into the expected weather changes. She noted that the impending arrival of the Southwest monsoon over Kerala around May 27 could significantly impact rainfall in Tamil Nadu. “The advancement of cloud formations over the South Arabian Sea, Maldives, and the Comorin area—along with similar developments in the South Bay of Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Islands—is likely to lead to heavy rainfall,” Amudha stated.
Dynamic weather models project that districts along the Western Ghats, as well as other interior districts, may experience substantial rainfall in conjunction with regions in Kerala this week. The RMC’s bulletin specifically highlights that heavy rain is anticipated in the Nilgiris, ghat areas of Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Erode, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Salem, and Tiruvannamalai on May 14. Isolated pockets in interior districts, including Tirupattur and Krishnagiri, may continue to see rainfall into Thursday and Friday.
In addition to the expected downpours, the RMC forecasts scattered rainfall events throughout Tamil Nadu until May 18, with some locations potentially facing thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/hour. The meteorological office will monitor cloud developments over both the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal to track the progress of the Southwest monsoon.
As Tamil Nadu prepares for these changes, residents are urged to stay updated on weather conditions and take necessary precautions against possible flooding and disruptions in daily life.
Tamil Nadu remains vigilant as weather patterns evolve, with many welcoming the relief that rainfall may bring after a period of intense heat. The potential impacts of this shifting weather will be closely watched in the coming days.
