Former President of Bangladesh, Mohammad Abdul Hamid, has made a dramatic exit from the country, boarding a Thai Airways flight in the early hours of the morning while wearing a lungi. This unexpected departure comes amidst turmoil in Bangladesh, as the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has banned the Awami League party, which was previously under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s leadership. The political climate in the country is tense, with many Awami League leaders feeling pressured to leave.

Reports indicate that Hamid’s departure took place at 3 AM from Dhaka International Airport. Eyewitnesses noted his hurried exit, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. Hamid, associated with Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, served as President from 2013 to 2023.

The Yunus administration has taken significant steps to suppress the Awami League’s activities, issuing a gazette notification on Monday that prohibits all functions of the party and its affiliated organizations. This ban has been enacted under the Anti-Terrorism Act and will remain in effect until the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has completed its proceedings against the party and its leaders.

Ziauddin Ahmed, Joint Secretary of the Public Security Division in the Ministry of Home Affairs, confirmed this development. The prohibited activities extend to all forms of communication—including media publications, online campaigns, and public gatherings. In a similar vein, the student wing of Awami League, the Bangladesh Chhatra League, was labeled a terrorist organization last October.

Additionally, the interim government has introduced amendments to the Anti-Terrorism Act, which include provisions to restrict individuals and entities connected to acts of violence and terrorism. This series of events marks a critical juncture in Bangladesh’s political landscape, raising concerns about freedom of expression and the broader implications for governance and democratic processes in the nation.
