Prateik Smita Patil Opens Up About Wedding Decision, Apologizes to Raj Babbar

The Babbar family found itself in the spotlight earlier this year when Prateik Smita Patil married Priya Banerjee on February 14, without inviting his father, actor-politician Raj Babbar, to the ceremony. Recently, Prateik opened up about the reasoning behind this decision and expressed his regret.

During an interview with Zoom, Prateik addressed the dynamics within his family regarding his wedding. He clarified that the absence of Raj Babbar and his half-brother, Arya Babbar, was due to misunderstandings rather than any personal fallout. Prateik explained that the marriage ceremony was private and hosted in the home of his late mother, Smita Patil. He felt it would be inappropriate to include his father and his family in the setting, given the historical complexities between his mother and his stepmother, Nadira Babbar.

“My father’s wife and my mother had complications in the past. Many things were said in the press if you dig into the history,” Prateik stated. “I was open to having my father and his family involved in another function. However, it didn’t feel right to have them at that house, considering everything that went on between them. It was simply not appropriate.”

He emphasized, “It wasn’t about rejecting anyone; it was about respecting my mother and her wishes. I’m sorry my father and his wife couldn’t be there in the house my mother bought for us. She wanted to raise me there as a single mother. I believe my wife and I made the best decision under the circumstances.”

Prateik also reflected on how people often react impulsively, making decisions and remarks out of emotion. He acknowledged that this has contributed to a lingering bitterness.

The Babbar family feud has drawn public attention primarily through Prateik’s recent marriage. Raj Babbar first married Nadira Babbar in 1975, with whom he shares two children, Juhi and Arya. Later, he married Smita Patil in 1983, welcoming their son Prateik in 1986. Tragically, Smita passed away in the same year due to childbirth complications. Raj and Nadira reconciled a few years later.

Earlier this year, Prateik revealed that he had changed his name to ‘Prateik Smita Patil,’ stating, “I don’t care about the repercussions. What matters is how I feel when I hear that name. I need to be wholly associated with my mother and her legacy.” He emphasized the importance of his maternal heritage, asserting that his identity and aspirations align more closely with his mother than with his father.
