Assam’s capital, Guwahati, experienced a fierce thunderstorm on the evening of May 10, unleashing heavy rainfall that resulted in significant destruction and disruptions throughout the city. The storm arrived unexpectedly, uprooting numerous trees, damaging streetlights, and impacting several vehicles in various locations.
Key areas, particularly the busy GS Road, faced severe traffic jams as rainwater quickly flooded the streets. Multiple neighborhoods became inundated, bringing vehicular movement to a standstill, with commuters stranded for hours amidst waterlogged roads and scattered debris.

Many residents expressed their astonishment at the storm’s magnitude and strength, with some describing it as one of the most violent weather events in recent memory.
Compounding the situation, large sections of Guwahati were plunged into darkness due to the storm’s disruption of the electricity supply. This widespread power outage caused considerable inconvenience for thousands of households, many of whom remained in the dark for hours even after the storm had subsided.
As of now, authorities have yet to provide an official damage assessment while city officials and emergency services work diligently to clear the debris and evaluate the circumstances on the ground.
