US Vice-President Vance Declares India-Pakistan Conflict “None of Our Business”

Washington, May 9 (IANS) US Vice President J.D. Vance stated that the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan is “fundamentally none of our business,” although he and President Donald Trump are urging both nations to reduce tensions. In an interview with Fox News, Vance emphasized, “What we can do is try to encourage these folks to de-escalate a little bit, but we’re not going to get involved in the middle of a war that has nothing to do with America’s ability to control it. We cannot dictate to the Indians or the Pakistanis to lay down their arms. Our approach will remain diplomatic.”

Vance, known for advocating US disengagement from international conflicts, expressed caution regarding the potential for the situation to escalate. “Our hope and expectation is that this is not going to spiral into a broader regional war or, God forbid, a nuclear conflict,” he noted, adding, “Right now, we don’t think that’s going to happen.”

These comments came in the wake of a failed attack by Pakistan on military installations in Jammu, Pathankot, and other areas, where India’s air defense systems intercepted and neutralized at least eight missiles launched from Islamabad. Earlier, President Trump also called for an end to what he termed “tit for tat” actions. “If I can do anything to help, I will be there,” he said, expressing his desire to see both countries resolve their differences peacefully.

Trump highlighted his close relations with both nations, stating, “Oh, it’s so terrible. My position is I get along with both. I know both very well and I want to see them work it out.” His statements followed India’s military operations against terrorist targets in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Punjab, executed in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 people dead. Pakistan’s military retaliated by shelling forward villages along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.

By encouraging dialogue and diplomatic efforts, Vance and Trump are aiming to mitigate escalating tensions in a historically fraught region, underlining the complex balance of US interests in South Asia.
