Tech billionaire Elon Musk’s Starlink has moved closer to launching its affordable internet service in India after receiving a Letter of Intent (LoI) from the Department of Telecom (DoT). The Department of Telecom outlined 29 additional requirements that satcom licensees must follow. These include mandatory interception and monitoring mechanisms, the use of local data centers, the tracking of mobile user terminal locations, and localization mandates. Next, Starlink must gain approval from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe). Reports indicate that the company has already submitted the required documentation, paving the way for spectrum allocation needed for its satellite-based internet service.
