Manipur Governor Engages Tangkhul Naga Community to Resolve Urgent Tribal Concerns
Imphal: The Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, engaged in a significant dialogue with members of the Tangkhul Naga community to address various challenges faced by tribal groups, particularly those in the Ukhrul and Kamjong districts. This meeting came on the heels of a visit by a seven-member delegation from the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), the foremost organization representing the Tangkhul Naga people, which was led by President Sword Vashum.
The delegation met with the Governor at Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Thursday, presenting a memorandum that detailed their demands. Central to their concerns was the issue of increasing tribal representation in the Manipur Legislative Assembly. They argued that enhancing the number of seats allocated to tribal communities would ensure their voices are more effectively integrated into the legislative decision-making process. Currently, out of 60 assembly members, only 20 seats are reserved for tribals.
Furthermore, the delegation advocated for a bifurcation of the state’s budget to better cater to the distinct needs of various communities. This proposed measure aims to facilitate more targeted development and optimize the distribution of funds, ensuring that all population segments receive equitable benefits.
In addition, the community called for the construction of a new office complex and a multi-purpose convention hall for the Tangkhul Naga Long in Ukhrul. They envision the new facility as a center for community events, cultural gatherings, and administrative activities, reinforcing their community’s social fabric.
In response, Governor Bhalla pledged to review the delegation’s concerns and work toward solutions to the challenges confronting tribal communities within the state.
