Operation Sindoor: International Airlines Reroute Amidst Tensions, Affecting Key Indian Airports

Tensions between India and Pakistan heightened following India’s military strikes on nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, targeting terrorist infrastructure. In response to the situation, many international airlines have opted to divert their flights away from Pakistani airspace. Flight tracking service Flightradar24 reported that non-Pakistani aircraft, including those en route to Pakistani airports and for overflights, are detouring, while Pakistani carriers continue with their scheduled flights.

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, indicated that air travel from several northern airports has been affected, particularly flights to and from Srinagar, which will not operate on Wednesday. The airline alerted passengers through social media, advising them to verify their flight status ahead of heading to the airport. Operations from Jammu, Amritsar, Leh, Chandigarh, and Dharamshala have also been impacted due to evolving airspace conditions. Additionally, flights from Bikaner in Rajasthan are experiencing disruptions as well.

The current atmosphere of uncertainty follows a terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 people. Before India launched its military operations, some international airlines had begun to steer clear of Pakistani airspace, but the recent strikes led to a significant reduction in air traffic over the region. Data indicated that there was no civilian aircraft activity north of Delhi, where several sensitive airports are located near the India-Pakistan border.

Numerous airlines, including Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Finnair, Saudia, Air Arabia, and Mahan Air, have adjusted their schedules to avoid Pakistani airspace, emphasizing the ripple effect of geopolitical tensions on global air travel.

As the situation develops, travelers are urged to remain vigilant and stay updated on the latest flight information. The aviation industry continues to feel the impact of these tensions, with airlines adapting swiftly to ensure passenger safety.

With over 13 years of experience in journalism, particularly in areas such as aviation and energy, the insights surrounding these developments can be attributed to industry professionals like Sukalp Sharma, Senior Assistant Editor at The Indian Express. The ongoing scenario not only underscores the volatility of regional politics but also highlights the interconnectedness of international travel and security concerns.

As these events unfold, further advisories and operational changes from airlines are expected as they navigate the complexities of airspace management amid rising tensions. Travelers should prioritize checking with their airlines and remain informed through reliable news sources.
