Engineers from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), led by Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran, embarked on a study trip to Paris to examine the impact of a waste-to-energy plant near the Eiffel Tower. This international visit comes amid growing protests from residents of north Chennai who are voicing strong opposition to a similar project proposed in their locality.
Residents have organized community meetings across 18 locations near the proposed site, including areas like Kannadasan Nagar in Kodungaiyur and Rajarethinam Nagar. These gatherings reflect the deep-seated concerns of more than 800,000 residents who argue that the congested area is ill-suited for such a development. “The government should consider relocating the plant far from the city, ideally amidst dense tree cover to reduce pollution,” stated S. Jeevan, an MDMK Councillor vocal in the opposition.

Shanmugam, president of the Federation of North Chennai Residents’ Welfare Associations, disclosed that communication has been established with Parisian residents living near a similar plant. “They report adverse health effects on children from nearby schools, plus issues with frequent infections and groundwater pollution,” Shanmugam explained.
