Urgent Alert: Overcoming the Growing Crisis of Chronic Respiratory Illness in Kashmir

Asthma, a chronic and potentially life-threatening respiratory condition, affects between 5% and 10% of Kashmir’s population, according to local medical experts, who urge early diagnosis and preventive care. Alongside Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), asthma has emerged as the third leading cause of death globally. Dr. Tanvir Ahmad, a specialist in chest diseases, states that chronic respiratory illnesses like asthma and COPD account for approximately 450,000 preventable deaths worldwide each year. He highlights that about 8% of adults in Kashmir suffer from asthma, with a significant number of affected children, and notes that women seem more susceptible due to environmental, genetic, and occupational factors.

The increasing asthma burden in Kashmir is attributed to cold weather, air pollution, biomass fuel use for heating, and exposure to allergens. Dr. Khursheed Ahmad emphasizes that early diagnosis and appropriate treatment significantly enhance quality of life, yet persistent myths and stigma delay necessary care. “Many patients avoid using inhalers due to false beliefs. Inhalers are safe and necessary,” he asserts.

Untreated asthma may lead to severe respiratory distress, long-term lung damage, or death. “Late diagnosis and irregular medication use heighten the risk of complications and hospital admissions,” warns Dr. Khursheed. He notes that India experiences ten times more COPD-related deaths than Western countries, largely due to insufficient awareness and access to specialized care. Dr. Javid Ahmad adds that many patients cease medication once they feel better, overlooking the necessity for lifelong asthma management. “Non-adherence is a major issue. Inhalers are effective and have few side effects when used correctly,” he explains.

Factors contributing to asthma in Kashmir include indoor pollution from wood and coal, outdoor pollution from vehicles and industry, allergens like pollen and mold, smoking, and poor ventilation. Medical experts recommend timely spirometry testing, consistent use of corticosteroid inhalers, avoidance of smoke and cold air, improved ventilation, and vaccinations against flu and pneumonia. They stress the importance of awareness campaigns to reduce stigma and encourage adherence to treatment.

To better manage asthma in Kashmir, improved surveillance, broader screening, and integration of asthma education into public health policy are crucial. “People with asthma can lead normal lives if they follow proper care. Awareness is the first step towards control,” affirm the doctors. By addressing the environmental and educational gaps, healthcare providers aim to alleviate the burden of asthma in the region and enhance the quality of life for those affected.
