Urgent Crisis: African Swine Fever Devastates Mizoram as Pig Death Toll Surpasses 3,400
The ongoing outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Mizoram shows no signs of waning, as recent reports indicate a worsening situation for local pig farmers. On Saturday alone, the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department announced the deaths of 36 additional pigs due to the virus, alongside 22 more culled as a preventive measure. This brings the total number of pig fatalities in the state to an alarming 3,461 this year, with 1,102 pigs culled in an effort to contain the spread.
The Lunglei district has suffered the most severe losses, reporting 31 deaths and the culling of 22 pigs just on Saturday. The Lawngtlai district also experienced five pig deaths within the same timeframe, prompting rising concerns among farmers and officials alike.
In 2025, four districts have been particularly hard hit by the ASF crisis: Mamit, Lawngtlai, Siaha, and Lunglei. Cumulative mortality rates reveal staggering numbers: Mamit with 173 deaths, Lawngtlai at 1,255, Siaha experiencing 1,979 casualties, and Lunglei reporting 54.
The spread of ASF has infiltrated numerous villages across these affected districts. In Mamit, three villages are grappling with the outbreak, resulting in 48 pigs culled. Lawngtlai has seen 15 villages impacted, resulting in the culling of 315 pigs. Siaha is the worst affected, with 26 villages enduring the virus and 693 pigs culled thus far. In Lunglei, five villages report infections, leading to 46 pigs culled.
In response to the devastating impact of ASF, authorities are enforcing stringent culling and containment measures aimed at halting the disease’s relentless march. However, the ongoing rise in pig mortality has sparked alarm among farmers and the state administration, who fear that if the epidemic remains unchecked, it could inflict lasting damage to Mizoram’s pig farming economy.
As Mizoram grapples with this crisis, the focus remains on controlling the outbreak while providing support to affected farmers. Efforts to disseminate information on biosecurity and disease management are critical in these trying times, as the state’s pig farming community faces an uncertain future. The coming weeks will be crucial to assess the effectiveness of current measures and to safeguard the livelihoods that hinge on this vital agricultural sector.
