Mizoram’s Historic Rail Link to India: Transforming Connectivity with July Commissioning
Aizawl: The much-anticipated Bairabi-Sairang broad gauge railway line project, which will connect Mizoram to the national railway network, is set for commissioning in July, according to an official announcement made on Friday. This groundbreaking project, spanning 51.38 kilometers, has been executed by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) and was initially sanctioned in the 2008-2009 financial year.
Kishore Sharma, the Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR, stated that the project has been fully completed, and trial runs along the railway line were successfully conducted on Wednesday and Thursday. Currently, railway safety inspectors are in the process of conducting inspections to ensure the line meets operational standards.
Significantly, the Bairabi-Sairang railway line is a crucial initiative under the government’s Act East policy, designed to enhance connectivity and economic integration throughout the Northeast region. This development will establish a direct railway link from Aizawl, making it the first time Mizoram will be incorporated into India’s expansive railway network.
With a revised project cost exceeding Rs 8,200 crore, construction commenced in 2015. The railway line is reportedly complex, featuring 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, and approximately 12.65 kilometers of underground tunnels. Additional infrastructure includes 15 cut-and-covered tunnels, five road overbridges, six underpasses, and four passenger stations located at Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang.
Officials have indicated that plans are underway to extend the railway network further to Mizoram’s southernmost district of Lawngtlai, close to the Myanmar border, highlighting the project’s ambitious scope.
In a related development, Arun Kumar Chaudhary, the General Manager of North Eastern Railway (Construction), met with Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Friday to review the advancement of key railway projects within the state. Discussions focused on improvements to the Bairabi railway station near the Assam border, the access road to Mualkhang station, and the ongoing work at Sairang station.
Chaudhary informed the Chief Minister that the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) has scheduled an inspection for early June. Following this, discussions suggest that the inauguration of the railway line will likely take place after June 17.
This project not only represents a significant infrastructure achievement for Mizoram but also stands as a vital component of the government’s strategic approach to enhancing regional connectivity and supporting economic growth in the Northeast.
