Akshay Sharma, founder of Woodfeather and Airborn, has pioneered this niche by transforming retired commercial planes and fighter jets into distinctive pieces like tables made from Antonov 12 engines and sofas carved from MIG 21 drop tanks. These creations cater to those who appreciate both beauty and functionality, often becoming conversation starters in living rooms.
Sharma’s ventures have attracted a diverse clientele, including pilots, celebrities like Gauri Khan and Ranveer Singh, and business icons such as Ratan Tata and Niranjan Hiranandani. Interestingly, 75% of his customers have no direct ties to aviation, underscoring the universal appeal of unique and aesthetically pleasing design. “India has been a great story for us,” says Sharma, highlighting that 60% of Woodfeather’s handcrafted propellers are now exported globally.
A passionate aviation enthusiast, Sharma’s journey took an unexpected turn when his eyesight thwarted his dream of becoming a pilot. Instead, he channeled his interests into media marketing, eventually earning a Private Pilot License in the US. His pursuit of aviation-themed home decor began in earnest when a propeller he ordered from the US went missing in transit. Disappointed but undeterred, Sharma crafted his own propeller, learning the intricacies of woodworking from local craftsmen.
Established in 2017, Woodfeather quickly evolved from producing a handful of pieces to launching annual collections. Utilizing reclaimed Burma teak, some logs up to 80 years old, the propellers now range from six to ten feet in length. “We faced a significant challenge with a 10-foot propeller order for a client in Riyadh, but it was a rewarding experience,” Sharma recalls. A pivotal moment came with a collaboration on the official Top Gun movie merchandise, which significantly boosted international recognition of his brand.
Exploring beyond propellers, Sharma founded Airborn to create furniture from aircraft parts. Overcoming hurdles in sourcing these components, he used his aviation connections to acquire a variety of aircraft materials. Each piece, from Air India’s galley carts transformed into plush trolley bars to Boeing 737 wheel coffee tables, carries the history of its airborne past. “This is my way of bringing iconic planes to life again,” Sharma explains, detailing the meticulous process involved in refurbishing aviation components.
The curated collection of furniture includes innovative designs like fire extinguisher table lamps and combustion chamber chandeliers, with prices starting at ₹2.5 lakh, available on Woodfeather’s online platform. Sharma’s dedication to merging luxury and aviation heritage has not only captured interest but also revived the legacy of these aircraft in a remarkable manner.
