India and EU Unite in Bold Commitment to Finalize Game-Changing Free Trade Agreement by 2025!
Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič have expressed their commitment to finalizing the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of 2025. Their discussions took place during a significant meeting in Brussels, where both leaders engaged in constructive dialogue aimed at tackling global trade challenges.
After the meeting, Goyal took to social media to highlight the productive nature of their discussions, which centered on improving market access for enterprises, fostering trusted supply chains, and enhancing partnership to stimulate economic growth on both sides. He noted that their agenda also included advancing innovation and competitiveness, alongside the vital role of investments and mobility in building a future-ready agreement. Goyal emphasized that both India and the EU, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, are dedicated to crafting a strategic and mutually beneficial agreement that promotes shared prosperity and sustainable development.
The meeting underscored the progress achieved across various negotiation tracks and reaffirmed the importance of sustaining momentum through monthly negotiation rounds and virtual engagements. Both parties reiterated their commitment to resolving outstanding issues in a spirit of cooperation, especially during the next negotiating round scheduled for December 12 to 16 in New Delhi. India highlighted that achieving meaningful progress in trade negotiations necessitates an equal focus on non-tariff barriers (NTBs) alongside tariff discussions, advocating for regulatory frameworks that are inclusive, proportionate, and do not restrict trade.
Optimism was palpable as both sides acknowledged that, once completed, the FTA could become a transformative component of the broader India-EU strategic partnership. This agreement is expected to enhance market access, support regulatory cooperation, and promote innovation and competitiveness. Both Goyal and Šefčovič recognized the essential role of investment flows and people-to-people movement in sustaining economic vitality.
As India positions itself as a “Vishwa Mitra,” or global partner, aligned with its developmental goals for 2047, the India-EU FTA is viewed as a pivotal tool for promoting diversified production networks and upholding fair trade principles. This dialogue aligns with India’s vision of establishing a future-ready framework that meets both national priorities and global objectives.
With India actively expanding its international presence through various free trade agreements, this latest exchange with EU leaders marks a crucial step toward creating a comprehensive and forward-thinking trading environment. As the negotiations advance, both sides remain hopeful for an agreement that not only strengthens economic ties but also sets a precedent for collaborative trade practices in an increasingly interconnected world.
