In a significant tribute to Bodofa Upendranath Brahma, a new road in New Delhi will be named Bodofa Upendranath Brahma Marg. This honor reflects Brahma’s pivotal role as a leader who championed the rights and cultural identity of the Bodo community in Assam. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will officially unveil the road and a statue commemorating Brahma during a ceremony on Thursday, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in attendance.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has chosen to rename a section of Lala Lajpat Rai Marg in South Delhi, making it a notable addition alongside other illustrious figures like Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi and the Manipuri freedom fighter Tikendrajit Singh. Brahma, revered as the “Father of the Bodo community,” is celebrated for instigating a movement in March 1987 that sought political rights and advancement for his community, ensuring the protection of its language and culture.
Pramod Boro, president of the United People’s Party Liberal and Chief of the Bodoland Territorial Council, expressed his pride, emphasizing that Brahma’s efforts led to the historic Bodo Peace Accord in January 2020. This significant agreement, reached between the Indian government, Assam government, and several Bodo groups, including factions of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), sought to address long-standing issues such as identity, land rights, and development in the Bodoland region. Boro highlighted the recognition of the Bodo language through the 92nd Amendment Act of 2003 as a significant milestone for the community.
To celebrate this momentous occasion, the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) has planned a grand illumination event, lighting five lakh earthen lamps or candles across the Bodoland Territorial Region, which includes Baksa, Udalguri, Tamulpur, Kokrajhar, and Chirang districts. The newly named 835-meter-long road, which is 50 feet wide, is strategically located near Kailash Colony Metro Station and runs adjacent to the Bodoland Guest House. The unveiling of Brahma’s statue will coincide with the 35th anniversary of his death, further emphasizing his enduring legacy.
“Bodofa dedicated his life to building an inclusive society where people could live with dignity and secure their rightful place,” said Dipen Boro, president of ABSU. He acknowledged the contributions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in making this tribute a reality.
The renamed road is part of a broader trend to honor figures who have made substantial contributions to Indian society and politics. Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Marg pays tribute to Assam’s first premier, while Bir Tikendrajit Marg commemorates singnificant historical events from Manipur’s past, further demonstrating the importance of recognizing diverse cultural heritages across the country.
The dedication of Bodofa Upendranath Brahma Marg not only serves as a reminder of Brahma’s impactful leadership but also aims to inspire future generations to uphold the values of unity, peace, and cultural pride in a rapidly evolving societal landscape.
