Alarming Decline: Assam Higher Secondary Pass Percentage Takes a Slide Across All Streams
In a significant revelation from this year’s Assam state board class 12 results, girls outperformed boys, even as the overall pass percentage across all streams fell compared to the previous year. The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) announced the results on Wednesday, marking the first Higher Secondary (HS) exam after the merger of two separate boards last year.
The Arts stream, which witnessed the highest number of examinees, reported a pass percentage of 81.03%, down from last year’s 88.36%. Similarly, the Science stream experienced a decline, decreasing from 89.88% to 84.88%. The Commerce stream followed with a pass percentage of 82.18%, a drop from 87.66% in 2024.
Despite these declines, girls demonstrated remarkable achievement across all streams. The pass rates for girls were 82.95% in Arts, 85.54% in Science, and 82.40% in Commerce. In contrast, boys recorded pass percentages of 78.4% in Arts, 84.39% in Science, and 82.08% in Commerce.
District performance varied significantly, with West Karbi Anglong and South Salmara achieving a perfect pass rate of 100% in the Science and Commerce streams respectively. Baksa district led in the Arts stream, with 94.21% of candidates successfully clearing the exam. The vocational stream, however, noted a lower pass percentage of 68.55%.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma celebrated the achievements of successful candidates on social media platform X, stating, “Congratulations to all the students who have successfully cleared the HS exams. Your sincerity and hard work have paid off, and I wish you the best for your future endeavors.” He also offered encouragement to those who did not pass, reminding them, “Remember you can always RESTART & achieve your goals.”
This year’s results underscore both the enduring resilience of female students in Assam and the challenges faced in the educational landscape as the board navigates the aftermath of its recent structural changes. The combination of declining pass rates and the evident gender gap in academic achievements prompts a critical examination of educational strategies and support systems moving forward.
As educational stakeholders reflect on these outcomes, the emphasis on improvement and support, especially for underperforming groups, remains crucial. The ASSEB and educational authorities aim to enhance performance standards and provide necessary resources to ensure success for every student in future examinations.
