Sikkim’s Vision 2047: Pioneering Border Security and Tourism with Organic Excellence
Sikkim’s Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang recently engaged in a pivotal video conference with Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia, targeting the acceleration of developmental initiatives under India’s vision of Viksit Bharat@2047. The virtual meeting, which took place on April 23, focused on harmonizing Sikkim’s growth strategies with national objectives. Key areas of attention included border development, sustainable tourism, and organic farming.
A primary highlight of the discussion was the pressing need to fast-track the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Vibrant Villages Programme. This initiative is crucial for enhancing infrastructure and connectivity in Sikkim’s remote border regions. Chief Minister Tamang expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I was especially heartened by the Minister’s emphasis on speeding up the DPR for the Vibrant Villages Programme, which will cover the entire stretch of our border regions.” Such efforts are anticipated to transform the livelihoods of communities in these often-overlooked areas.
Attention was also directed towards the Chiwabhanjyang corridor on the Sikkim-Eastern Nepal border, identified as a vital strategic asset. Tamang emphasized its potential to bolster cross-border trade and unlock new economic opportunities, adding, “I highlighted the strategic importance of the Chiwabhanjyang corridor, which has the immense potential to enhance trade with Eastern Nepal.”
Tourism, a cornerstone of Sikkim’s economy, was another significant point of discussion. Both leaders explored plans to boost homestays in remote villages, an initiative designed to preserve cultural heritage while generating income for local residents. “The promotion of homestays in remote villages is one of the ways we plan to empower local communities, strengthen the rural economy, and promote sustainable tourism,” Tamang remarked. The Chief Minister further noted the necessity for skilled manpower to support the burgeoning tourism industry, stressing the importance of improving service quality alongside infrastructure development.
The conference also saw Minister Scindia reviewing various ongoing projects in Sikkim, providing valuable feedback and support. Tamang voiced his appreciation for the central government’s unwavering assistance, particularly in the tourism sector. “We are seeing continuous support from the Central Government, and this has been instrumental in the growth of Sikkim’s tourism sector,” he commented.
A broad spectrum of issues, ranging from organic farming and strategic trade routes to tourism circuits and essential infrastructure, was covered during the interaction. The Chief Minister acknowledged officials from MDoNER and the Sikkim government for their efforts in organizing the conference and underscored the importance of Center-State cooperation in achieving the vision of a developed Sikkim. “I extend my deepest appreciation to Hon’ble Minister Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia Ji for spearheading the discussions on crucial sectors… The collaboration between the Centre and the State is vital, and I believe it will accelerate our shared vision of a developed, resilient, and prosperous Sikkim,” Tamang concluded.
This strategic dialogue marks a significant step towards realizing the developmental aspirations of Sikkim, aligning the state’s initiatives with the broader national vision. By focusing on infrastructure, sustainable tourism, and regional trade potential, Sikkim positions itself for robust growth and enhanced quality of life for its residents.
