Solemn Devotion Unites Nagaland: Good Friday Reflections
Christians throughout Nagaland solemnly commemorated Good Friday on April 18, reflecting on Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, a pivotal event in the Christian faith. Across the state, worshippers engaged in fasting, special services, and contemplative activities at churches and private gatherings. Dramatic reenactments highlighted Christ’s final moments on earth, while sermons emphasized themes of sacrifice, divine love, and the redemptive power associated with Good Friday.
In the predominantly Christian state of Nagaland, Holy Week, starting with Palm Sunday and ending with Easter Sunday, holds deep significance. It celebrates the Resurrection of Christ, a cornerstone of Christian belief that offers hope and renewal to the faithful. As part of the observances, churches were filled with believers who gathered to honor the selfless sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio extended his message during this solemn occasion, emphasizing the Gospel’s essence: “Jesus Christ gave His life on the cross to redeem humanity.” He added, “His selfless act of love offers us forgiveness, unmerited grace, and the hope of new and eternal life for all who believe in Him. Blessed Good Friday to all.”
With Good Friday observed reverently, the Christian community in Nagaland now eagerly anticipates Easter Sunday, celebrating Christ’s Resurrection, symbolizing triumph over sin and death. Many parishes will hold Easter Vigil services on Saturday night, as the faithful await Easter’s dawn with anticipation. One of the highlights is the annual Easter Sunrise Service at the Kohima War Cemetery, drawing hundreds who gather to celebrate the risen Christ.
Nagaland Governor La Ganesan also shared his Easter greetings, highlighting the global nature of the celebration. He remarked, “Easter is celebrated around the world with great reverence, reminding us of God’s boundless love and the spirit of forgiveness.” He continued, “As we commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, may our hearts be filled with joy, hope, and abundant blessings,” conveying his wishes for a blessed and peaceful Easter.
