Assam CM Meets Rijiju in Delhi: Urgent Flood Relief & Rehab Pledge
GUWAHATI, July 2 — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju at the latter’s official residence in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss flood relief, rehabilitation and recovery measures following this year’s monsoon floods. Sarma said the meeting focused on accelerating relief operations and rebuilding livelihoods for those affected across the state.
Sharing the outcome on X, Sarma expressed gratitude for Rijiju’s recent visit to Assam to review the flood situation and described the talks as “a fruitful meeting,” adding that the Union minister offered “very valuable observations.” The chief minister said discussions centred on strengthening rehabilitation efforts and ensuring coordinated action between the Centre and the state.
Rijiju, in a separate post on X, confirmed the meeting and complimented the Assam government for the proactive measures taken during the floods. The exchanges underscored continued Centre–state coordination on immediate relief, medium-term rehabilitation and long-term recovery plans after this year’s monsoon deluges.
Sarma also held talks with Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh at the minister’s official residence, focusing on boosting Assam’s fisheries and dairy sectors. He said the discussions explored ways to increase fish production, strengthen the value chain, improve processing infrastructure and expand market access to promote fish exports.
Outlining a vision for the sector, Sarma said the state will work to translate these ideas into concrete outcomes that could “propel Assam into a major fish-producing and fish-exporting hub.” On dairy, he said officials discussed enhancing veterinary services, setting up Pashu Aushadhi Kendras, establishing UHT (tetrapack) and milk powder plants, and improving cattle stock through artificial insemination to strengthen dairy cooperatives.
The meetings signal Assam’s push to couple post-flood recovery with economic initiatives in fisheries and dairy, aiming to restore livelihoods while unlocking longer-term growth opportunities in the state’s agro-based industries.
