Arunachal Deputy CM Ignites Cultural Splendor at Grand Inauguration of International Maha Sangken Festival at Namsai
The Golden Pagoda in Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh, came alive with the commencement of the three-day International Maha Sangken Festival, a celebration rooted in Tai-Khamti Buddhist traditions, marking the arrival of the traditional New Year. The festival, which kicked off on Monday, featured a range of spiritually significant rituals, cultural performances, and sacred ceremonies.
Deputy Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Chowna Mein, along with Namsai MLA Chau Zingnu Namchoom, led the opening rituals, which began with the reenactment of the “Descent of Lord Buddha to Earth at Dawn” at the Golden Pagoda and Parayatti Sasana Vihara. The day’s festivities also included a peaceful procession from the Entry Gate to the Festival Stage, attended by thousands, including dignitaries, local communities, and international tourists.
In his address, Deputy Chief Minister Mein extended heartfelt Sangken greetings, stating, “Sangken is a sacred time when we believe Lord Buddha descends to bless the Earth. Bathing his idol in clean water is a symbolic act of reverence, purity, and devotion.” The festival’s rituals and ceremonies aimed to promote appreciation for the region’s rich heritage and cultural diversity.
A highlight of the day was the ritual washing of monks’ feet, a practice symbolizing humility, respect, and the seeking of blessings. Families also continued this tradition by washing the feet of their elders, reinforcing the festival’s themes of gratitude, familial reverence, and renewal. Mein emphasized the festival’s broader vision, explaining, “This festival is more than just a religious occasion. It marks the onset of spring – a season of rejuvenation and renewal. The act of pouring water symbolizes cleansing of the soul and inviting prosperity and well-being.”
The event featured enthralling performances by Thai cultural troupes and traditional Tai-Khamti dancers, showcasing the region’s rich cultural heritage. Mein highlighted the festival’s role in promoting tourism, stating, “The International Maha Sangken Festival is a spiritual and cultural experience that positions Arunachal Pradesh on the global tourism map. Its growing popularity with tour operators and foreign visitors reinforces our plan to host it annually at the Golden Pagoda.”
Notable attendees included prominent state leaders, dignitaries, and international visitors, including Ambassador of Italy to India, Antonio Enrico Bartoli, who confirmed his participation in the next day’s events. The International Maha Sangken Festival has become a significant cultural event, celebrating the region’s spiritual heritage and promoting tourism and cultural exchange.
